Hello all!

Now look what happened: the CD is currently unavailable. Does that mean that those with a profound dedication to Zelenka have bought all the CDs or that the CD just isn't there yet?

Be it as it be, I am very much looking forward to throwing the CD into my CD-player for the first time. And as I listened to the performance on radio I do not think that the CD-player will spew it out early :D

Best wishes!
David

According to Adam Viktora himself, the CD is now in the "pressing shop", so it will be ready for release in December.

I have reminded him of the two other "transition masses", ZWV 14 and ZWV 15, so we might be even more lucky some day...:)

Hi all,

We don't have to wait till December! I just received the CD of Ensemble Inegal. It's wonderful!
By the way: Bernius and his orchestra and chorus are indeed planning a release of the Missa Votiva. But it will probably not be available until the end of 2009...

Best wishes,
Peter

I have it and it's a gem. Quite incredible when you think that it was composed in 10 days! It already bears some style typical for the works to follow and yet it is so different and original.
Big applause for Nibiru. Wish there were more little labels like this that can get into premiere recordings with such enthusiasm.

Yes. One doesn't have to be Catholic to have a religious experience while listening to this mass!

This is the last time Z. uses timpani in a mass, but he has already become quite selective about where this should feature.

I am surprised and delighted with the music. The performance is splendid and deserves to go straight into the list of outstanding CD's, please!
Among so many things that could be mentioned, I'd like to say that rarely have I been so pleased with the sensitivity shown by trumpet players. This is not usually the first thing that comes to mind with trumpeters. Here, though, they are full of dynamism, rhythm, beauty as well as musicianship. What a pity that a search reveals that their names are not given in the excellent booklet that comes with the CD.
May I suggest that Alistair (who is in touch with the conductor, Adam Viktora) finds out if at all possible who they are and lets us know their names. Zelenka has provided lots of great opportunities for them and they deserve to be acknowledged.

Hi Andrew,

I have tried to contact Adam Viktora by e-mail about your request and some other matters, but so far there has been no reply. Perhaps he is on a trip - or maybe he has become rich and famous and therefore difficult to contact because of us buying so many of his CDs! :)

All the best. /Alistair

Hi again,

Here is the reply regarding the trumpet players: "The excellent trumpet players are named in the booklet as clarino players (clarino - correct term for the baroque trumpet)."

Now we know!

Thanks for explaining the Clarino for me. I suppose that I should have known that it is "the highest register of the trumpet in baroque music" as my dictionary states.

To be fair, the order of names on page 3 was unusual - violins & violas followed by clarinos before oboes, flutes. I had looked in vain on page 4 for the trumpets where the other performers are all listed - cellos, viola da gamba, double bass, organ, bassoon, theorbo and timpani.

The main point is that we have the four names, they play magnificently and have most deservedly received the credit.

Hi again Andrew,

Thanks. The "Cum Sancto Spiritu" is currently posted on the opening page of the Discover Zelenka website, clarino players and all. Surely someone who is new to Zelenka couldn't fail to be impressed by this clip!

Incidentally, Adam Viktora is married to Gabriela Eibenova. So the love of Zelenka seems to run in the family! I know this because it was Gabriela who answered my last message.

Regards /Alistair

I have been informed by Adam Viktora that the Nibiru recording of ZWV 16 got a 5-star review on Goldberg (see http://www.goldbergweb.com/en/news/novelties/2008/05/67400.php.

I offered to send a copy of the CD to Gramophone for a possible review, and this I did in the middle of June. It's a pity, though, that Gramophone has so little baroque, and what there is is usually Händel or Vivaldi :)

Will keep you posted on this issue, if anything comes of it. I also want to send a copy to BBC Music Magazine, but they haven't replied to my initial enquiry.
