Ristori - Litanie di S. Francesco Xaverio

  • Guys,

I prepared a modern edition of Ristori's Litanies di S. Francesco Xaverio. The clear manuscript is available here: http://imslp.org/wiki/Litanie_…istori,_Giovanni_Alberto)

My motivation was the following: I know the fantastic 'naive' Nativity Mass by Ristori recorded for Carus; I have just one other CD of the composer, containing some duettos, which are a bit less inventive, but still fine. Now, we all know the fantastic Litaniae Xaverianae by Zelenka; I started wondering whether Ristori had created something of similar quality? Well, frankly, I can't say he had ;) This is very 'easy' music compared to Zelenka. Still, if anyone's interested, here's the score (I will prepare orchestral parts, too, and post the whole thing after proofreading at the IMSLP):

  • Do you know of any available recording of this Litaniae? or other musical compositions for the Litaniae Xaverianae?

I have heard other baroque composer put music to the LX but I have find only Zelenka's.

And thank you a lot for your work with Ristori's music.

Thank you very much for the kind words! Unfortunately I know of no recording; I managed to make 2 conductors vaguely interested in it but so far nothing concrete has materialised.

I honestly thought Tuma or Heinichen wrote similar Litaniae but it seems my memory was playing tricks on me.

You remembered correctly about Heinichen! His ones were in 1724 (S.86) and 1726 (S. 87). Both are on IMSLP as 'Litania pro Festo San Francesco Xaverii'.

Another two composers to add to the Xaverian list are Butz and Schürer. There was a performance of Schürer's one a while back, mentioned here by djdresden. He calls both his and Heinichen's compositions 'truly outstanding works', so they must be worth exploring. So far, I can't find Schürer's work online, however. As for Butz, I'm not sure if his are still extant, but he's mentioned as composing for the Xavier Octave a number of times, according to Jan Stockigt in her book :)
