I don't have the disc, but it appears this was originally released by DHM in 1990 under the title Baroque Christmas Music - Natus est Jesus

then rereleased by RCA in 1995 as Baroque Yuletide.

It also appears that ZWV 108 is the only Zelenka work on these discs. It has really become one of his best recorded vocal works.

I believe I have the disk you're looking at. Mine has a Renaissance painting "Beweinung Christi" on the cover. It has a copyright date of 1996, and the catalogue # is 10557. I wasn't aware that there was another release of it.

Here is a Zelenka recording of whose existence I was unaware, released last August apparently.

Lukas Hurnik (Conductor), Gaudium Pragense, Kopecka, Veronika (Soprano)
It contains:
Litaniae omnium sanctorum ZWV 153, Laudate pueri in D major ZWV 81,
some of the Responsoria ZWV 55; as well as works by Tuma and Cernohorsky.

Has anyone heard it? Is the ensemble any good?

This is very likely the recording of Sub Olea Pacis, ZWV 175, led by Marek Stryncl, which includes the Ensemble Philidor. I guess this is a data entry error or something on the part of Amazon. The recording includes the libretto of the work...

On May 4th & 6th, 2007 Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor & Barockorchester Stuttgart will be performing the Missa Votiva, along with Bach's Motet Jesu, meine Freude. Two sacred baroque choral masterpieces (in e minor) in one concert.

The soloists are:
Joanne Lunn - Sopran
Robin Blaze - Altus
Benjamin Hulett - Tenor
Thomas E. Bauer - Bass

The May 4th concert is in Stuttgart's Leonhardskirche, and the 6th is in Flörsheim am Main. To anyone who's able to go, I'm envious!

Both recordings are completely professional and satisfying. The Virtuosi Saxoniae perform on modern instruments (they are the principals from the Dresden Staatskapelle), but are stylistically sensitive.
My strong preference is for period instruments in this repertoire, so personally my vote would go to the Bernius.

Having said that, though, the Güttler recording gave me years of enjoyment until Bernius' recording came along. (The end of the Credo is just thrilling for example.) Some of Bernius' tempos might be considered on the extreme side. But he probably has the better team of soloists on the whole (Daniel Taylor is amazing in the sublime Agnus Dei aria).

In the end this probably comes down to whether or not you prefer period instruments.

Does anyone have any further information regarding when this recording might be released? This is the only one of the five late masses that is yet to receive a satisfactory recording, in my opinion. This would be a very welcome addition to the catalogue.
